13/02/2018 - FOOD Week 2017

Recognised as Australia’s longest running regional food festival, Orange F.O.O.D Week celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2016.

The shires of Orange, Cabonne and Blayney are known as ‘The Food Basket’ of New South Wales and each year the Orange F.O.O.D. Week (Food of Orange District) festival supports the promotion of the incredible diversity of our fresh local produce and cool climate wine with an annual event held over ten days in March/April.

The festival showcases our clever and creative local producers, chefs, cooks, caterers, cafes, restaurants, and wine-growers, as well as other tourism and hospitality enterprises that provide the region with its growing reputation as one of Australia’s most aspirational food and wine destinations.

Orange F.O.O.D Week comprises six signature events including: FORAGE, the 100-Mile Dinner and F.O.O.D Train, as well as F.O.O.D HQ, the Festival Night Market in Robertson Park and the Sunday Producer’s Brunch and Market in Cook Park.

More than 90 satellite events hosted by local restaurants, cafes, caterers and cellar doors complement these signature events, creating a full program of long lunches, degustation dinners, foodie tours and wine tastings. From feasts, fiestas, food-inspired art exhibitions, paddock pop-ups, polo matches, movies and more, Orange F.O.O.D Week is an essential event on every foodie’s travel calendar.

This year FOOD Week starts on 31st March.

01/01/2017 - Happy New Year

An exciting year for Lakeview Luxury Cabins

What a year it’s been for us! As well as enjoying the company of hundreds of wonderful guests, we embarked on the beginnings of a new two-bedroom cabin that can be enjoyed by two couples travelling together. This will then allow a couple to enjoy a cabin or a small group of up to four couples to enjoy the three cabins. We look forward to officially opening our new cabin in mid 2017.

We were thrilled to be recognized at both the regional and state tourism awards in 2016. We won the Regional NSW Tourism Award for self-contained accommodation and then attended the NSW Tourism Awards and were awarded a bronze in the same category. The standard across the state is extremely high so we were honored to achieve this recognition.

Orange is continually growing and its’ offering is incredible. We have more brilliant coffee shops, four galleries, a brand new visitor centre and museum, some beautiful new fashion and homeware stores and our restaurants continue to be applauded for their food and service.
We can’t wait to see what else pops up in 2017 and look forward to welcoming returning and brand new guests to our cabins.

Happy New Year, everyone!

26/11/2012 - Passionate about Wine

We are passionate about our local wines and so many of the local vignerons are really passionate about making excellent wines. You can enjoy a complimentary bottle of local wine when you stay at Lakeview Luxury Cabins.

This week we went wine tasting at De Salis winery near Orange.  The De Salis "Lofty Vineyard" is the highest vineyard in the Orange region at 1050m above sea level and is nestled just below Mt Canobolas. Owners, Charlie & Loretta Svenson make some great wines – mainly utilising the wild yeast in the fermentation.

Not only are they passionate about their wines, they also have a fabulous location with spectacular views. For more information about De Salis go to www.desaliswines.com.au

We recommend making the trip to De Salis wines when you are in Orange.

A review by Peter Bourne in Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine (Apr/May 2012): "Loretta and Charlie Svenson are new to Orange, sort of. Charlie is a research scientist who first made wine in 1999 at the Canoblas Smith winery, continuing to work vintages alongside regional pioneer Murray Smith. The purchase of the Lofty Vineyard along with an enormous packing shed and spectacular views back to Orange turned a hobby into a profession. The newly created cellar door features a balcony to capitalise on the magnificent outlook. The wines are excellent with incredible depth and a special sense of place."

18/11/2012 - Walking on the Mountain

Mount Canobolas is a State Conservation Area and has a range of interesting trails and bush walks. The summit of the mountain is 1395m above sea level and about 500m higher than Orange and it hosts a range of interesting habitats including heath and subalpine woodland (it regularly receives snow in winter). It is also quite a distinctive local landmark.

Many of the walks on the mountain require a reasonable level of fitness and vary from short (up to 30min) to long (more than 2 hours). At the moment the heath is in flower and are quite attractive near the road and near “The Walls” picnic area. If you aren’t into walking, you can drive to the summit for some spectacular views.

In warmer weather, the mountain walks are delightful early in the day when the air is still cool and fresh. For more information on the mountain and walks visit http://www.orange-nsw.com/MountCanobolas.html or http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/mount-canobolas-state-conservation-area.

Lakeview Luxury Cabins is a great place to stay in Orange if you are planning on making a visit to the mountain.

Today there were a lot of dragons on the lake (dragon boats at the annual regatta on Lake Canobolas). It is only a short walk to the lake if you choose Lakeview for your accommodation in Orange.

This is the fourth year this regatta has been held - it attracts a large crowd with a real carnival atmosphere.  There are a range of events for community groups, schools and sporting clubs – some teams are experienced and some are just there for a bit of fun, there are even some quite serious competitors. The weather was fantastic for the event with clear skies and a cooling breeze.

The dragon boats train each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday on Lake Canobolas (http://www.orange-nsw.com/DragonBoatClub.html). So, if you come and stay you can take a relaxing walk around the lake and watch the dragon boats go through their paces.

We’ve had a few big frosts in the last week – if you are coming to Orange, pack some warm clothes. The days have been fantastic – sunny and calm making it feel a lot warmer than the thermometer says.

On Saturday the fiery sunset was magnificent (photo). We are still enjoying the colours of autumn as the last trees change colour around town. Lakeview is a great spot to see the sunset, with the colours reflected in the lake.

26/04/2012 - Enjoy the colours of autumn

After a cool and wet summer, April has been quite dry and mild and there are some fantastic colours in the deciduous trees around the district. It is a great time to visit Orange.

The apple harvest is nearing completion so there is some beautiful fresh fruit available (try a really fresh apple and you’ll experience what apples are meant to taste like). Although FOOD week is over, there are still things happening such as the Orange Apple Festival – May 11 – 13th (Mother’s Day weekend) – for details see www.tasteorange.com.au or www.orangeapples.com.au.
